Make the most of these balmy late-summer nights – there’s plenty to do on the doorstep of Hillfield Village, as well as further afield.

Wonder at the spectacle that is the British Firework Championships from the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth. Located on the harbourside and overlooking Plymouth Sound, the Aquarium’s Maritime Gardens provide the perfect vantage point from which to view the dazzling pyrotechnic displays. And if it’s wet, the ceiling to floor windows will protect spectators from the elements.
Doors open at National Marine Aquarium from 7pm. Exhibit areas open to view 7pm-9.30pm on Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 August. Fireworks 9.30-11pm. Limited ticket numbers.

Escape to the Greek island of Skopelos (virtually that is) when Mamma Mia is shown as part of Hannah’s open-air screenings over the Bank Holiday weekend. Also showing are Top Gun, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Absolutely Fabulous: the Movie. There will be pre-show food, music and games from 7pm. Films start at 8.30pm. Bring chairs, picnic blankets and warm clothes.
Hannah’s Open Air Cinema, 25-27 August from 7pm.
Hannah’s, Seale Hayne, Newton Abbot.

Pack a hamper with locally-sourced canapés, with maybe a bottle of Sharpham fizz, and head to the beach (Strete Gate perhaps?). Spread out a blanket, pass round the nibbles and watch the sun sink over the sea.

If you happen to drop into the Kingsbridge Inn in Totnes on a Friday evening you could be forgiven for thinking you are in Buenos Aires. For the first Friday of the month is Tango night (or a Milonga) where skilled dancers gather together to practice this powerfully rhythmic dance.
Tango Night, Friday 3 September, Kingsbridge Inn, Totnes.

Paddle upstream on the River Dart in a Canadian canoe gathering firewood on the way. Pause on the riverbank to light a fire and drink warming soup, while listening to a river tale. Paddle back to the sound of owls. No previous canoeing experience needed.
Evening Paddle, South Devon AONB event. Friday 26 August 6-10pm. Meet in Totnes, TQ9 5LA.

Party on the bowling green lawn at Coleton Fishacre as the jazz band strikes up on the Loggia. Enjoy cocktails and canapés while soaking up the beautiful surroundings of the D’Oyly Carte’s 1920s summer home on this special evening of elegance and music.
Jazz Age Lawn Party, Sunday 4 September, 18:30 – 21:00.
